Who are we?

Trevis

I’m Trevis, an early retired travel lover who has decided to take the opportunity of a lifetime to trade a conventional working life for one of long term travel. My profession was as a software developer and software development manager.

More people probably know me through my hobbies, though. Specifically social dancing (Salsa, Zouk, Argentine Tango, Swing, Bachata, Kizomba) dancing and photography. I plan to share my favorite images and the boring details of our slow traveling lives here and on Facebook.

I’m Chrissy, and my love for travel began when my parents, a pastor and a stay-at-home mom, took me and my sisters on road trips around the Midwest to visit relatives during summer vacations. We spent long hours in the car reading books and singing silly songs broken up by picnics, camping in our tent, and playing with cousins.

As an adult I started planning trips with friends to places like New York, Mackinac Island, and the Gulf Coast. Then I met Trevis and he caught my travel bug – yay! We both got passports and took off on our first of many trips together.

Where we are, where we've been?

What have we been up to?

Unexploded Ordinances in Laos

Like most people my age and younger, the war in Vietnam is a distant memory. It was a far away war with objectives that no one seemed to really understand. It caused a lot of pain and suffering for a lot of people.

A Slow Boat Journey Down the Mekong River

As we were planning our nomadic journey, we knew we wanted to spend time in Southeast Asia—especially Thailand and Vietnam. To round out the region and fill the time before heading to New Zealand, we decided to add shorter stays in Malaysia, Cambodia, and Laos.

Highlights of Chiang Rai

During our one full day in Chiang Rai we had a whirlwind tour to see some of the highlights in the area. We visited Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple), Wat Rong Seur Ten (Blue Temple), Baan Dam Museum (the Black House), House of Opium, Chui Fong Tea Plantation, Golden Triangle and a Padaung Village (the Karen Longneck). It was quite a lot in one day but it was great to get a taste of everything.

Chiang Mai – City Review

How to review a city? Should I review cities? I’m toying with the idea and this is my first attempt. I really don’t want to be negative about any place since it’s all going to be so subjective so I’m trying to come up with a specific set of categories to try and make it a little more objective, but also to highlight why my overall experience may be a “me” problem, and not something everyone visiting would feel or experience.

Digital Money in Thailand

The official currency in Thailand is the Thai baht (THB). The symbol for Thai Bhat is ฿. Cash is used quite regularly in the Kingdom of Thailand, but they are modernizing and digitizing quickly. You’ll see QR codes and digital payment options all over the place.

Church in Thailand

One of the risks of visiting a new congregation, even in the U.S., is that you are not in the loop. What I mean is that if something is going on that disrupts their ordinary published schedule, no one is going to think to tell you about it, even if you’ve been in contact with them ahead of time.

Johnnyboy Elephant Care

One of the most popular things to do in northern Thailand is to visit an elephant sanctuary. For some reason, it just didn’t interest me that much. I like animals as much as the next person, I think, but I’m not a big fan of zoos and artificial environments.

On My Thai Bookshelf

Our stay in Thailand began with a week in Bangkok, then a week on the island of Koh Samui, and now a month in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai. The only real book collection I’ve encountered at any of the places we’ve stayed was at the house on Koh Samui, but the owner of that house is German, and so were all of her books.

So This Is Christmas

This isn’t the first time I’ve spent Christmas outside the US, but it still took me a little bit off guard this year.

Visiting the USA

Maybe we just weren’t gone long enough? Maybe we just heard too many warnings. But our first time back to the US after 6 months of nomadic travel was… not strange at all.

Let’s Go to the Post Office in Thailand

The only remotely tricky part of sending postcards from Thailand was the drive to the post office, everything else was a breeze.

Bangkok, Thailand: First Time Visitor

I don’t know what I expected but… other places we’ve visited in Asia, China, India, Japan…those visits did not prepare us for Bangkok.

Baño, WC, Tuvalet, Aseo?

Even after you figure out how to ask for the bathroom, you never know what you may find inside!

Around the World in 180 Days

I have to start this off by recognizing the incredible, absolutely incredible amount of privilege we have been graced with in being able to have experienced this adventure. Yes we made significant sacrifices in order to make this happen, but being healthy enough, wealthy enough and fortunate enough to possess a passport that was welcomed by the places that we visited are all paramount to having made this possible. Not to mention the incredible facebook communities that helped us to learn and plan this journey of a life time.

Transatlantic Cruise on the Celebrity Apex

Ok, I was kind of dreading it. I know people who *love* them. Nothing about them has ever been appealing to me. Thousands of people in a floating hotel which also has a shopping mall, and a Casino inside! It just sounds like a nightmare.

Favorites of Seville

We spent a little over three weeks in Seville, Spain between September and October. We didn’t do a lot of research and really had nothing planned except to relax after having walked the Camino de Santiago. We didn’t know what we’d be up for after such a potentially challenging trip so we kept our plans loose

Let’s Go to the Post Office in Spain

Sending postcards home from Spain was a bit of an emotional roller coaster ride due to Europe’s response to increased U.S. tariffs. … Spain might not send mail to the U.S. … Spain will send mail, just not packages. … Spain says they will send anything under a certain value, but individual post offices might interpret that as sending nothing at all.

Church in Spain

As we plan out where we are going to travel, one of the factors that we consider is whether there will be a Christian, preferably Lutheran, church nearby. We plan our travels six to twelve months in advance.
